I found the reselling process to be cumbersome – I needed to post the same info twice, to both Facebook and Craigslist. I had to renew the items so they don't expire. I also had to reduce the item prices if they didn't sell. So I decided to do what any right minded overzealous, "pragmatic" software engineer does – instead of spending 10 minutes every few days reducing the prices and renewing the items, why not spend 3 weeks to build out a fully decked out Electron app that does all of the above automatically for you? Why not indeed... In the end, it's been a fun ride and I learned a lot. And actually! now it's coming in handy as I'm finally starting to sell the backlog of items that I've accumulated. Show HN: Mailwitness – Digital Signatures over Email Hi HN, I'm Marek Dopiera and I wanted to share the digital signature solution which I made with my software house. Your feedback would be much appreciated. We've just launched it - it's a service for signing documents over e-mail - https://mailwitness.com . It still has some rough edges, but hopefully it is useful already. To sign a PDF with somebody, you e-mail them the PDF and put sign@mailwitness.com in CC. If they agree, they need to forward it to sign@mailwitness.com. When they do, you all get your document signed. You can generate PDFs from e-mail, too for convenience. We made this to raise the safety bar of agreements made via e-mail. Via anecdotal evidence, we know that if people do not use services like DocuSign or HelloSign, they consider an e-mail conversation as proof or they print, sign and scan documents. I think we're offering more safety and convenience, because we're preventing the documents from alteration, forging fakes and backdating (by using OpenTimestamp, which essentially constructs a Merkle tree and puts its root into a Bitcoin transaction). I'm hoping that our service becomes useful also because it doesn't require any sign-up (just one confirmation e-mail for Ts&Cs), it's free (in the basic model) and doesn't require the extra cognitive load on learning a web app or a mobile app. You may argue, that one can create a fake e-mail account and use that. That's a valid point, but the reality proves that verification via e-mail is enough for lots of people (vide the agreements over e-mail or DocuSign or HelloSign). In the future we may create paid options, which would include extra identity verification. Even without that extra option, things are not as bad, though: if you use your work e-mail, it's usually your employer who verified your identity. Another question you might have is spoofing. If your e-mail has a valid DKIM signature (which is the case for most major e-mail providers), we'll accept your message. If it doesn't we'll send you a message to verify that you can also receive e-mail. For data safety, we have designed the service such that we discard the documents as soon as we process an e-mail (usually a low number of seconds). Finally, there is legal safety. We operate under the EU law, which qualifies us as a "Trust service provider" and puts requirements on our service. What we do, qualifies as an "Advanced Digital Signature" and according to the EU law, cannot be denied legal effect based on the grounds that it is digital. Monetization path is unclear yet - I want to see if this catches on and if yes, how people are going to use it. Some options include extra services like using your own certificate rather than ours or identity verification. After many struggles, I finally built this app that traces images using circles similar to what these videos had shown. The most challenging part (to me) is to find a way to convert images to vector lines. I had tried Potrace, but its output is not suitable for my use case: too many small elements share the same border. Potrace's goal is to represent the original image faithfully using vector lines. But I want to trace the image edges. After searching and trying some Potrace alternatives in vain, I finally found my keyword. Surprisingly (to me), it lies at the end of the wiki page of the very topic [2]. Then I found a paper [3] that has nice pseudocode and a C implementation. I rewrote the pseudocode in Rust because I wanted to experiment with rustwasm. Honestly, I didn't care much about the math behind it. From then, I could continue to finish the app and show it to the world. This app is also my chance to learn about rustwasm and WebGL. Show HN: A Network of Knowledge Feeds Hi Everyone, I wanted to talk to this community about a particular story from my experience to see how the community feels. I have noticed that I have a lot of educated friends from top universities in my country who are having problems finding work due to a lack of experience, which has brought me to a conclusion that diplomas and CVs are not really good at conveying the knowledge someone has. A friend of mine who is already working on his own company told me that he had trouble finding people to work for him, so I thought about an idea that I am currently incorporating into my app. Perhaps we could make it much easier for you to show your knowledge to companies, as easy as show and tell. A network of live knowledge feeds that constantly keep updating over time showing how someone has evolved. If you know something, put it on full display for everyone to see, show something you have made and explain how you made something so that everyone can understand. If you are good at something, you probably won’t have a hard time explaining it to others, and other people could perhaps learn something by simply following your feed. Educational Institutions have curriculums that aren’t really adaptable, but if we rely on people expressing their unique knowledge to the world, we can create countless combinations of curriculums that will be much more adaptable for the problems we have to face today. Think of it as a Postgres read/write cluster with several nodes except that all the nodes in Flatsauce share the same storage. Flatsauce intelligently routes data between the nodes and incorporates a file locking mechanism to ensure there is no data corruption. In traditional read/write replication scenarios usually a write instance is the source of truth. First data is written to the write server then the data is copied to all the read nodes. When more read nodes are needed to run long-running queries the storage needs to be copied for each node. Show HN: Newser, utility written in go to generate a pdf with news content I've gotten myself a Supernote A5X (awesome device btw) and since it doesn't have a web browser or anything I've wanted to have a way to read news on it. I've hacked together this utility in a couple of days and it works wonders for me personally so I thought it might be interesting to others. It can also be used as a noise free newspaper generator as it removes images/ads/links and other noisy stuff. https://ift.tt/Su7EifL (there is a screenshot of the first page of the generated pdf) It scrapes (news) websites for content and puts it into a pdf. For me the pdf location is my dropbox supernote directory so my setup is to run this thing daily and have a fresh pdf with news whenever I want it. It's rough around the edges probably (currently added crawl support for verge, ars, engadget) but I think it's a good base so if anyone wants to contribute feel free. Some of the stuff I want to add is pictures (maybe), maybe parse the text html to include font styling and other stuff. I've tried to generalize it as much as possible so the crawling is pretty much automatic and is controlled by a config file where you define "rules" on how to parse the website. Show HN: A Theory of Anxiety Conditions Hi HN, I ve been in this community for a while now and have a huge amount of respect for the people and the forum so I wanted to post this here. This is a pretty random one and I wish to emphasise from the very beginning this is not medical advice and is only based on what I saw in myself. It is therefore entirely up to anyone kind enough to have a read to decide whether they think what I describe makes any sense for them. If people have comments or thoughts I think it would be quite cool to use the GitHub issues as a forum for discussion and collecting peoples’ feedback. TLDR When I was diagnosed with an anxiety condition I thought about the specifics of what was going on in my mind probably an unhealthy amount. I wrote it down, then rewrote it many many times and it then sat in my draw for a few years, and I ve finally decided I should put it online just in case it helps someone else. I believe we have largely overlooked the possibility of using introspection of one’s own consciousness to gain scientific understanding and theories of the casual mechanism involved in anxiety conditions. I propose that when I study my own consciousness there appear to be useful abstractions (many of which we already allude to in common language) and that formalising the system described by these abstractions appears to be useful for understanding the casual mechanism underlying the anxiety conditions I experienced. At it’s most basic the casual mechanism I propose relates to the existence (under certain conditions / beliefs) of a feedback loop between those feelings that are partially endogenous and our thoughts (under the definitions of these terms laid out in the essay). Whilst I can only analyse myself, this casual mechanism also appears to be consistent with and explain many of the clinical characteristics of the anxiety conditions described in the DSM. I believe it also sheds light on the current successful therapeutic approaches as well as their failings. However, as emphasised throughout, this is, and can only ever be a theory about me, and can only ever be falsified on an individual basis. Therefore, I would love to hear other peoples’ opinions on whether this description of my conscious experience and the theory I propose is also true for them.
